Weekend Snapshot: A day at a Teaching Zoo
ON Sunday, Maya and I went to a local Community college that has one of the top Teaching Zoo's. Moorpark College Teaching Zoo is a short distance from us and has many rescue animals that the students learn to train. Here is a few photos of the animals we saw. I fell in love with Mowgli the Ocelot..hence the couple extra photos of him....

Using all my locally grown vegetables
I had a surplus of tomatoes and more lettuce then we could eat, so I made two soups today. I LOVE soups! I made tomato soup with croutons and lettuce soup! The lettuce soup was my first try ever; I was not quite sure about it, but it is tasting delicious. If you want to give this recipe a try, I found it on epicurious Lettuce Soup
All veges used for my soups were grown locally and OH does it taste YUMMY. Bon Appetit!

This is NO laughing matter
So I start this with a little joke from Saturday Night Live! And this is a great SNL! Yet this is serious and not a laughing matter... THIS IS OUR COUNTRY we are talking about, and Palin is just NOT READY to run (what I wouldn't mind is see Palin debate with Hilary not on SNL, but LIVE!!!)
If you don't believe my fears read the following

Who is Sarah Palin
I have waited and taken a few deep deep breaths throughout the last 2 weeks to make sure I gave this nomination a fair shake. I was QUITE shocked to say the least when I heard that Sara Palin was going to be on McCain's ticket! As MANY others, I said WHO!?!?!??!
Wow, a woman. Smart move McCain! REALLY shocked our SOCKS off!
I have given the shock factor to subside and form a fair opinion of this ticket.
To be honest I FEEL like this is now a Circus Act.
Here is what I have read about Palin.
Who is Sarah Palin? Here's some basic background:
She was elected Alaska's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.
Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.2
She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000.
How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.
So Governor Palin is a staunch anti-choice religious conservative. She's a global warming denier who shares John McCain's commitment to Big Oil. And she's dramatically inexperienced.-- What makes me laugh at this is that McCain has been on Obama's case about HIS Inexperience and then he turns around and picks a person WITHOUT experience. What does that say about McCain!?!?
Palin just last year was quoted saying, "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq."
Palin has actively sought the support of the fringe Alaska Independence Party. Six months ago, Palin told members of the group—who advocate for a vote on secession from the union—to "keep up the good work" and "wished the party luck on what she called its 'inspiring convention.'"
Palin doesn't believe that humans contribute to global warming. She has even said, "I'm not one though who would attribute it to being manmade."
Palin has close ties to Big Oil. Her inauguration was even sponsored by BP.
Palin opposes comprehensive sex-ed in public schools. She's said she will only support abstinence-only approaches. (VERY VERY INTERESTING. THAT OBVIOUSLY WORKED WELL FOR HER 17 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER)
As mayor, Palin tried to ban books from the library. Palin asked the library how she might go about banning books because some had inappropriate language in them—shocking the librarian, Mary Ellen Baker.
Palin claimed that she said "thanks, but no thanks" to the infamous Bridge to Nowhere. But in 2006, Palin supported the project repeatedly, saying that Alaska should take advantage of earmarks "while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist."
MY BIGGEST TWO problems with her. ONE. The fact that she lied about the BRIDGE to nowhere! And TWO, the unfortunate fact that her 17 year old daughter is pregnant. I KNOW that her home life and her children are none of OUR business, But I just cannot help it! SHE IS anti sex education in the school, anti abortion, PRO abstinence, etc.. WHICH IS all fine, those are her rights to believe in, but honestly, it is a joke to be soo strongly opinionated about them and then find yourself on the presidential ticket with your OWN 17 year old unmarried daughter 5 months pregnant! WOW!
Here is my take on Teen age pregnancy. Abstinence is a nice concept and I hope that all children wait until they are old enough to make the RIGHT decision, but we all know that they WILL NOT ALWAYS, so let's educate them. I am not pro abortion by any means, actually if anything I AM PRO adoption, and I THINK that is what SHOULD be done in this case. These are kids. 17 year old and an 18 year old, they are children themselves. FORCING THEM to get married (and YOU KNOW that is what is going on here, or else, WHY HAVE THEY waited 4+ months to GET MARRIED, what are THEY WAITING FOR.. Palin is MAKING THEM get married)....is not a solution. How are they going to support this baby, what JOBS are they going to have, how are they going to feel years down the line, when they have no education and they have this child to raise. I am not saying it is not possible, but Palin is in a "strange"situation here and THE WORLD Is watching (and that is unfortunate for her 17 year old daughter and the father of the child she is carrying)....
I have very strong feelings about TEENAGE pregnancy, and it is true, this is a personal situation, but when you sign yourself up to be on the Presidential ticket, then what is personal is NOW FRONT page news....and that is unfortunate, but it is a fact of life.
My problem with McCain is I feel like this pick was not a smart pick in terms of WHO COULD HELP ME RUN this country, but more like a stab at finding the best way to "WHO CAN GET ME TO WIN THIS PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION!" Read what the NY Times thinks about this Palin Disclosures Raise Questions on Vetting
PS And do not call me sexist. I AM NOT. I want a woman as a VP or President, I JUST WANT the RIGHT woman... and this is not it!
I leave you with this Obama commercial...

Weekend Snapshot: Montreal
![]()
I am back from a few days in Montreal, Canada. I had a fabulous time. I loved most of all being able to speak French all the time. Montreal is in Quebec, Canada, and French is their first language; BUT DO NOT worry, they speak perfect English as well.
I could not pick just one photo, so I went with my three favorite places in Montreal. First was Olive et Gourmando. It was just down the way from our hotel, so we had all of our leisurely breakfasts there...
Then we had a beautiful lunch at L'Epicier in the old town of MOntreal. The menu changes daily and is written on the chalkboard on the wall. I loved the color of the wall.
I could have spent hours at both L'Epicier and Olive + Gourmando, but luckily, Montreal has many beautiful spots. One of my favorite was Le Marche Jean-Talon, in Little Italy, Montreal. It reminded me of a European Market. The berries were to die for. If I lived in Montreal, I would be at the market every day.
I actually had four FAVORITE spots, but the last one I did not take a photo. Last night, we had dinner at the BEST restaurant I HAVE EVER eaten at; Restaurant Raza. Raza is owned by Peruvian Chef Mario Navarrete Jr. We stumbled upon his restaurant by chance and were in heaven from the moment we walked in. The restaurant is small but well thought out. The servers were fabulous, so full of joy and knowledge and pride. We opted for the 5 course meal, which was exquisite! Chef Navarrete has worked under some of the BIG named Chefs in the States and he has come to a style of his own and we absolutely LOVED IT. He came to our table and we had a fabulous chat. If you are EVER in Montreal, this PLACE IS A MUST!
If you would like to see photos of the place, I just found another blog that wrote about this restaurant back in 2007. Click here and it will take you to PERU FOOD BLOG. Though, do not be fooled, RAZA is not your typical PERUVIAN food; not by ANY MEANS! The creativity is EXQUISITE!!! And they shop every day for their FRESH ingredients.
